2021 Bike Group rides

1. THAMES AT LAMBETH – Tuesday 9th March 2021
Start and finish: Brockwell Lido
Ride Route: To Kennington Park and visit to the garden designed by Colonel Sexby, and the Prince Consort Lodge, built as a model dwelling which was “state-of-the-art” in 1851; Cleaver Square, laid out in 1789, the earliest square to be developed south of the Thames; Black Prince Road, and the site of the Royal Doulton offices and factory; the White Hart Dock where barges docked, carrying China clay brought from Cornwall; the Albert Embankment to Lambeth Bridge, the Museum of Garden History and Gardens, the Church of St Mary at Lambeth and Lambeth Palace. Return by Brixton Road and Hackford Road to see Vincent van Gogh House and Van Gogh Walk.

2. BATTERSEA PARK CIRCULAR- Tuesday 16th March 2021
Start and finish: Brockwell Lido
Ride Route: To Battersea Park and the Peace Pagoda; a tour of the Battersea Power station redevelopment, and the Coaling Jetty; the Thames Embankment; Cleaver Square; Kennington Gardens. Return by Brixton Road.

3. GRAND SURREY CANAL ROUTE – 23rd March 2021
Start and finish: Rosebery Lodge, Dulwich Park
Ride Route: From Court Lane Gate, through East Dulwich to Surrey Canal Park; along the Surrey Canal Road which follows the original route of the Canal; the Thames Path, Greenwich and the Cutty Sark). Return via, the Thames Path to Surrey Docks and a tour of South Dock, Greenland Dock, the Russia Dock Woodland and a climb to the top of Stave Hill. The return was via Surrey Canal Road.

4. RICHMOND PARK – Tuesday 30th March 2021
Start and finish: Brockwell Lido
Ride Route: Via Clapham Common to Wandsworth Common, and Wimbledon Park; across the A3 via an underpass to the Telegraph pub (where a semaphore tower had once stood, linking London to Portsmouth so that signals could be sent from the Admiralty); via Roehampton Lane to Roehampton Gate into Richmond Park, with a lunch stop; to Penn Ponds and then a climb up to the Royal Ballet School (White Lodge). Return by the same route.

6. MORDEN PARK BY THE WANDLE – Tuesday 20th April 2021
Start and finish: Brockwell Lido
Ride Route: Via Clapham Common, Wandsworth Common and Earlsfield to the Wandle Path, the Wandle Meadow Nature Park, past the site of the Merton Abbey Works of William Morris, established in 1881; the site of Merton Place, where Admiral Nelson and Lady Hamilton lived; a restored working water mill; past Deen City Farm and into Morden Hall Park. Return via King George’s Park and traffic-free Wandsworth High Street to Wandsworth Common.

7. HYDE PARK – Friday 7th May 2021
Start and finish: Brockwell Lido
Ride Route: Via Clapham Common, Battersea Park and Albert Bridge; Chelsea Old Church and garden; Imperial College and the Queen’s Tower; via Alexandra Gate into Hyde Park; visit to the Princess Diana Memorial Fountain. Exit park at Hyde Park Corner and return via Constitution Hill, Buckingham Palace and Vauxhall Bridge.

8. RICHMOND PARK AND THE ISABELLA PLANTATION – Friday 28th May 2021
Start and finish: Clapham Junction station
Getting there: Train to and from Mortlake (with Freedom Pass)
Ride Route: Mortlake Station; enter the park by the Sheen Gate, past the Royal Ballet School (White Lodge); walk around the Isabella Plantation up beside the little brook lined with a amazing display of azaleas and rhododendrons in full bloom, and ferns, irises, gunnera and other lush aquatic vegetation. Return via Ham Cross, Pembroke Lodge, leaving the Park at Sheen Gate and Mortlake Station.

9. BUSHY PARK IN THE RAIN – Friday 4th June 2021
Start and finish: Clapham Junction Station
Getting there: Train to and from Teddington (with Freedom pass)
Ride Route: Teddington Station to Bushy Park; a walk around the Upper Lodge Water Gardens, a formal garden set out on a grand scale and dating from 1710; Bushy House (not visited); observed a small herd of stags “in velvet”, left the Park through the Chestnut Avenue gate. Return to Teddington Station.

10. DULWICH STREET ART TOUR – Tuesday 15th June 2021
Start: Rosebery Lodge, Dulwich Park; Finish: Townley Road
Ride Route: Tour from Dulwich Park to view street art, visiting Court Lane, Barry Road, Blackwater Road, Lordship Lane, Goose Green, Bellenden Road and Vale End. Return via St Francis Park and Green Lane.
Street art by Stik, Thierry Noir, Nunca, Mear One, Beerens, Remi Rough & System, inspired by works of art from the 17th and 18th century in Dulwich Picture Gallery curated by (the late) Ingrid Beazley, a teacher at Dulwich Picture Gallery.

12. VICTORIA AND OLYMPIC PARKS – Tuesday 13th July 2021
Start and finish: Denmark Hill Station
Getting there: Train to Hoxton Station (with Freedom Pass)
Ride Route: Along towpath of the Regent’s Canal to Victoria Park (the pond and the two sculptures, 'Skyscraper' and 'Bird'); leave the Park via the Cadogan Gate; via an elevated bridge over the A12 to the Olympic Park and a tour of the park; on the towpath of the River Lea Navigation, past Old Ford Locks to Three Mills, the one remaining tidal mill of eight mentioned in the Domesday Book. Return by the same route.

13. SYON HOUSE AND TEDDINGTON – Friday 23rd July 2021
Start and finish: Clapham Junction Station
Getting there: Train to Mortlake Station (with Freedom Pass)
Ride Route: Mortlake Station, along the Thames Path and across Chiswick Bridge, upstream to Strand-on-the-Green and along Brentford High Street to Syon Park and Syon House (not visited). Return on the Thames Path to Richmond Lock and Weir, under Twickenham Bridge and Richmond Bridges; past Orleans House and Marble Hill House to Teddington Station and train to Clapham Junction.

17. SURREY COMMERCIAL DOCKS – Friday 8th October 2021
Start: Denmark Hill Station; Finish: Burgess Park
Getting there: Train to Canada Water (with Freedom Pass)
Ride Route: Canada Water and via Deal Porters Walk to Surrey Water and on to Salt Quay where there is one of the Scherzer rolling Bascule bridges. A tour of the former Surrey Commercial Docks, Lavender Dock, Rotherhithe Street, Old Nelson Dock, the Russia Dock Woodland, and Stave Hill; on to Greenland Dock and South Dock. Return via Surrey Quay and the cycleway past Millwall Football ground to Burgess Park.

18. THAMES TO ORLEANS HOUSE – Tuesday 19th October 2021
Start and finish: Clapham Junction station
Getting there: Cycle to Clapham Junction, train to Mortlake Station (with Freedom Pass)
Ride Route: Mortlake Station, Thames Path, Chiswick Bridge, under Kew Bridge, past Brentford Ait (island) and Kew Gardens, Richmond Lock and Weir. Crossed the river on a small ferry to Orleans House and Gardens (lunch). Return by Thames Path (north side), Marble Hill Park and House, Richmond Road, to Syon Lane Station.

19. BATTERSEA PARK – Friday 29th October 2021
Start and finish: Brockwell Lido
Ride Route: Via Clapham Common and Battersea Park to the Battersea Power Station development (now called Circus Village West); on the elevated roadway to see the newly-opened Battersea Power Station (Underground station). Return via the Thames embankment to Vauxhall Bridge and Lambeth Bridge.

20. WATERLINK WAY TO GREENWICH – Tuesday 9th November 2021
Start: Penge East Station; Finish: Burgess Park
Getting there: Cycle or train through Sydenham Hill Tunnel (with Freedom Pass)
Ride Route: Join Waterlink Way, Bell Green (site of a gas works in the 19th century), alongside the Pool River and the Ravensbourne River in the Linear Park; into Ladywell Fields, crossing the railway line on an unusual elevated helical bridge. The path follows the route of the Ravensbourne, to Deptford and on to Deptford Creek and Greenwich. Return via Thames Path upstream to South Dock and Greenwich Dock, and Surrey Quay to join the cycleway past Millwall Football ground to Burgess Park.

21. LONDON PARKS AND PALACES – Friday 26th November 2021
Start and finish: Brockwell Lido
Ride Route: Via Clapham Common and Battersea Park to Chelsea Bridge and Hyde Park; From Alexandra Gate to Kensington Gardens, Kensington Palace and the Italian Gardens. Hyde Park Corner, Constitution Hill, to Buckingham Palace and St James’s Palace; the Mall and Horse Guards Parade to Whitehall Palace; Whitehall to Parliament Square and the Palace of Westminster; Lambeth Bridge to Lambeth Palace. Return route was via Black Prince Road, Kennington Park and Myatts Fields.

22. CHRISTMAS RIDE – Tuesday 7th December 2021
Start and finish: Clapham Junction Station
Getting there: Train to Mortlake (with Freedom Pass)
Ride Route: From Mortlake to Richmond Park through Sheen Gate; past the Royal Ballet School (White Lodge); leave the Park at the Ham Gate, past Ham Common to Teddington Weir Footbridge. Mulled wine and mince pies was served at “The Anglers”, with a presentation to Peter Saunders to thank him for leading the Group as Convenor for over six years. Return via Teddington High Street to Teddington Station for return to Clapham Junction.
