Starting a group

  • It may be that a group you want to join is full and you’re on a waiting list. Or you’d like to get together with others with a similar interest. If so, there's nothing stopping you from starting one up yourself!
  • If you have an interest that isn’t already covered, let the Interest Group Coordinators (IGCs) know - you can contact them at Group Coordinators. They will advertise the topic in our Newsletter and see if there is interest in such a group and if a convenor will step forward.
  • You could consider being a convenor yourself. There is a handbook but it’s easier and simpler than you think. The role is mostly administrative, arranging meetings and informal chairing. You don’t need to be a subject expert but if volunteer teachers are required, the IGCs can help with this.
  • You can also get advice from one of the national subject advisers. Contact them via u3a for helpful resources, as well as support and inspiration for setting up new groups.

"Come with some ideas of where to meet/host your sessions and think about whether you might like to act as convenor of the group. We have a handbook for you and I offer continued advice and support whenever you might need it. Convenors are not necessarily teachers as such but they lead the members of their group and make sure that everything runs smoothly."
